Early years at the Harbour International
Our approach to teaching our youngest pupils is founded upon these beliefs and based on current research. Our learning environments (indoor, outdoor and emotional) endeavour to reflect this too. The layout of the environment promotes relationships, communication, collaboration, and exploration through play. Materials are thoughtfully added to the environment to promote creativity, thinking and problem-solving skills, questions, experimentation and open-ended play. Play is a young child's learning and most of the week is filled with child-led play experiences, where the adult facilitates learning through skilled interactions, following the children's interests.
In line with our year plan and as part of our desire for continued improvement and our self-reflective practice, we are including more child-initiated topics of interest that may or may not be found in the IPC document.
Teachers lead short sessions for Early Maths skills, including number sense and we use the support of an Early Years Maths consultant to inform our practice.
